Yup: On the recording I was removing the hum from, I found a dead space like between tracks where the hum could still be heard and used that "sample" for the noise reduction.

Once it samples the noise, you get to apply the rate of reduction or filtration. If you overdo it, the overall sound becomes way compressed. No problem though, you can re-do it again and again until you enter the save portion where it filters the whole track.

It also removes ticks, pops and scratches from digitally recorded vinyl, which is my next project.

does it remove scratches and pops from already digitalized vinyl files?

I think that's what I was trying to get at. I've recorded an old jazz collection from vinyl to CD and from there can import into Audacity. Once imported I believe you can remove pops and scratches. Then of course you'll need to save and reburn to CD if that's the format you wish to keep.
